My Thoughts
This is an emotional read with the themes of family, identity, love and relationships firmly at the centre. Charlotte starts the book in an idyllic phase of her life, planning her marriage and revelling in being in love. A health scare jolts her out of that and sets in motion a string of events which lead her to question her relationships and what she wants out of life.
Charlotte has to try to come to terms with the fact that she was adopted as a baby. Feelings of rejection surface and are shown to have infiltrated how she regards herself and others, especially her mother. She is afraid that anyone she loves will reject her and 'unchoose' to love her. It is a very touching story and in Charlotte, Louisa has created a sympathetic character. You can't help but empathise with her despite her insecurities.
The relationships between Charlotte and her mother and also with her biological mother are touchingly portrayed. As secrets from the past come to light, Charlotte has to address a new reality and decide who she can trust and which friendships will endure. Breast cancer and the implications of genetic testing are addressed with sensitivity. Beneath the light surface of a romance, there are some dark issues brewing.
In short: a heartwarming story of trust, love, family and friendships.
About the Author
Award-winning author Louisa George has been an avid reader
her whole life. In between chapters she managed to fit in a BA degree in
Communication Studies, trained as a nurse, married her doctor hero and had two
sons. Now, she spends her days writing chapters of her own in the medical
romance, contemporary romance and women’s fiction genres. To date, she has 19
books available in ebook/print.
Louisa’s books have variously been nominated for the coveted
RITA® Award and the NZ Koru Award (which she won in 2014 and 2016 for the Short
Sexy Category) and she won the prestigious HOLT Medallion Award in 2017. Her
books have been translated into twelve languages. She lives in Auckland, New
